PLACE TO VISIT IN GENTING HIGHLAND

STRABERRY PARK
The Genting Highlands Strawberry Leisure Farm is a popular tourist attraction in Gohtong Jaya, nestled directly at town opposite the Mawar and Bunga Raya Apartments. The farm can easily be reached by taking left from the roundabout past Hotel Seri Malaysia (if coming from Karak Highway), and following the road all the way to its end. Strawberries are not the only cultivations - mushrooms, herbs, flowers and hydroponic vegetables are also grown here commercialy in adjoining nurseries. Besides the farm's marketplace, visitors can also purchase strawberries by plucking them directly and paying by weight from 100gm onwards - this is a very popular family activity.

CHIN SWEE CAVE TEMPLE
Chin Swee Cave Temple is a popular tourist attraction and religious site located a few km before the peak of Genting Highlands on a sharp, rocky slope. Originally a cave temple, years of development have produced an expansive physical complex that extends far beyond the altar chamber, rooted in traditional Chinese architecture expressed by ornate prayer halls, colourful statues, opulent archways and its iconic pagoda tower. The temple was built by the founder of Genting (Lim Goh Tong) to venerate Buddhist figure Chin Swee, a year after he constructed the first resort and casino in 1975. The site was chosen as it reminded him of his birth village's landscape in Fujian, China.
Tediously constructed over 18 years with a foundation dug from solid bedrock, modern machinery was eschewed because of the steep terrain that resulted in its unusually long development period. In 1994, Chin Swee Temple was finally open to public, but additonal layers were added over ensuing years to create the sprawling complex visitors see today. Evolved heavily from its roots, the temple no longer pays sole homage to Chin Swee, but a pastiche of Buddhism, Taoism, Shamanism, Confucianism and various other 'isms' from Chinese folk belief. Various deities linked to those beliefs litter the compound in the form of stone statues, sculptures, shrines, altars and paintings - some of light-hearted fantastical imagination, while others of a macabre nature.

The original temple hall that houses the black-faced Chin Swee altar lies below the complex, hidden slightly deep inside a rocky chamber. Some of the prominent structures to explore include the iconic nine-storey pagoda lit by lamps, Sky Terrace - a vast square on top the complex with a view of the valley, 'Ten Chambers of Hell' - a sloping hilltop walk past story-telling statues built into small cave recesses, and finally, a giant 15-meter high Buddha statue wedged between the jungle canopy across the hill. Lim Goh Tong Hall provides temple accommodation for visitors while a vegetarian restaurant serves meals. There is also a cable car station that connects between Awana Skyway and Genting Resort that operates on weekends and public holidays.

MUSHROOM FARM

The mushroom farm occupies a hidden spot behind Genting Resort on the peak, located just before the exit to Kuala Lumpur at the traffic roundabout. Little has changed in terms of appearance over the years, but business remains brisk at this established tourist attraction. While the farm cultivates and sells mushrooms in shanty warehouses, it also has a very popular food court in the main building, housing several restaurants in a hawker stall (kopitiam) setting. On the farm grounds near the entrance, visitors can view a turtle pond, fountain and colourful statues depicting mythological creatures from Chinese and Western folklore.
Inside, narrow alleyways lead to warehouses that grow popular varieties of fungi and mushroom in cannister-like tubes, stacked horizontally on shelves. A small plot of land next door is also used for growing vegetables. A visit usually ends at the shop within the main building that sells traditional Chinese snacks, herbs, tea, souvenirs, handicrafts, jewelry and fashion apparel, along with the farm's fresh produce including mushrooms and greens. Finally, the restaurants at the food court inside provide some of the cheapest dining options at Genting, being some of the only non-resort owned establishments on the peak. The mushroom and vegetables farms are open daily from morning till evening, but the restaurants serve food till late night.

Happy Bee Farm   &  Insect World

Happy Bee Farm and Insect World is located along the main road a short distance before Gohtong Jaya town - where visitors can look at local honey production and even sample some of this sweet delight. The admission ticket provides for a guided tour across the premises, including honey tasting, viewing a gallery of live and mounted insects, and complimentary honey-based drink at the cafe. A boutique shop retails local handicrafts, souvenirs and picture frames with mounted insects, but also live beetles that visitors can purchase as pets. Meanwhile, the adjoining section showcases various honey products including balm, soap and sweets also for sale.

Mini Cameron Highlands Garden

Mini Cameron Highlands Garden is an agricultural show farm and shopping arcade in Gohtong Jaya, located slightly before town along the main road from Karak Highway. The garden features strawberry and vegetable farms scattered across a sloping landscape, with fresh crops for sale daily at the market, including strawberries, hydroponic vegetables and mushrooms. At the shopping arcade, visitors can browse a wide range of fashion apparel, souvenirs and even a small bee museum with honey products. A restaurant next door serves a wide range of Western food and local dishes, while hidden in the background is a small Malaysian village which showcases traditional homes.

Memorial Hall Lim Goh Tong

Lim Goh Tong Memorial Hall commemorates the founder of Genting Highlands, who passed away in 2007. The hall is located right next to his burial ground in a private park, a gentle hill slope landscaped with trees and flowers in Gohtong Jaya - nestled directly along the main road a short distance way from town. A wooden effigy of the man himself, seated on a throne of flowers with a backdrop painting depicting Genting Highlands, greets visitors as they clamber up the hall. A small fountain at right adds some serenity while a shop enclosed in a recess along the way sells snacks and drinks. Open daily from 8am to 10pm, the park is closed to public but can be viewed from afar.

Cable Car Ride Genting Skyway

Genting Skyway, opened in 1997, is one of the longest and fastest gondola lifts in Southeast Asia. Spanning 3.38km from the base station in Gohtong Jaya town all the way up to the peak - it's an exhilarating ride hundreds of feet up steep mountain slopes. An earlier built station (Awana Skyway) provides additional cable car transport on weekends and public holidays, providing an extra stop at Chin Swee Temple. This cable car service also functions when Genting Skyway is closed for maintanence. Running at six meters per second, the cable car completes its journey in 11 minutes. Each cabin carries eight passengers, with enough cars to support 2,000 people per hour.
For safety, the cable car system features Swiss technology with periodic maintenance and support by solid pylons dug into 40 meter bedrock. While being quick and economical, the cable car ride is also a great way to see the highlands, with amazing views of lush rainforests and landscapes from high up in the air until it reached Genting Resort. Visitors can take the ride up from the base station in Gohtong Jaya, which is housed in a 5-storey building with adjoining 10-storey car park. The station has a small shopping mall contained inside while express buses and taxis from Kuala Lumpur drop by regularly. If you've booked a room in one of the resorts at the peak, you can even check in your stay along with luggage at the station. The cable car service runs from 7.30am to 11pm daily, but operates till midnight during weekends and peak periods. If closed, a large signboard provides advance notice at Gohtong Jaya town.

Theme Park Rides, Family, Children

The outdoor theme park is Genting Highland's largest family attraction, offering recreational activities and amusement rides in a cooling environment high up the mountain slopes. Visitors can explore over 50 types of rides, including roller coasters, ferris wheels, swings, carousels, trains, cars and ships that tumble through the air, barrel down water channels or crawl slowly along a steel track. Boating, archery and go-karts are more activity choices, while mini concerts and performances by clowns and mascots provide crowd entertainment on holiday weekends. On most days, the Genting Theme Park is easily the liveliest spot on the peak, next to the casinos.
Thrill rides are designed for adults with minimum height and age requirements, along with safety belts and harnesses, to prevent early or unwanted deaths. These most popular of these rides include the Spinner, Space Shot, Flying Dragon, Corkscrew and Flying Coaster, all designed to maximise excitement through wild motion and crazy speeds. Family rides are much slower and emphasize more on sightseeing aspectes; these are catered for children and parents to sit together and enjoy the fun. Some examples include the Astrofighter, Monorail, Pirate Train and Tea Cup. Then there's Beryl's Chocolate Wonderland, a cheesy imitation of Willy Wonka's original factory with shopping racks full of chocolates for visitors to purchase and gorge.

At the lake, visitors can ride around on paddle boats, soaking in a view of the colourful surroundings. Several playpens around the amusement park, including a day center for kids, is where parents can leave small children to occupy themselves. Another activity for children is the Rainforest Splash Pool, an indoor heated water park that faces the Sungai Rejang Flume Ride and wave pool. There is also an indoor section of the theme park housed in the First World Plaza, which offer a smaller and much milder range of rides. Open daily from 10am to 7pm, the Genting Theme Park opens earlier at 8am and closes as late as 10pm on weekends and public holidays. Ticket prices begins from MYR38 for an adult day pass with unlimited rides, with two-day and express lane options.
